The Brazilian wine industry is expanding, seeking to improve quality of the entire production chain. Santa Catarina State has been highlighted recently, especially in high altitude regions (above 900 m), due to the particular soil and climate conditions. This differential result in complete technological and phenolic ripening of grapes destined to wine production. The objective of this study was to characterize productive and qualitative components of 'Merlot' grape and wine grown in high altitude regions of Santa Catarina State. The experiment was conducted in Campo Belo do Sul, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, at Abreu Garcia winery (27°40'4?S, 50°44'48?W, altitude 950 m) during season 2012. The vineyard was planted in 2007, row orientation was north to south, plants were trained in vertical shooting positioning trellis and grafted on '1103P'. The variables analyzed were climatic characterization, productive components (cluster weight, yield per plant and per hectare) qualitative components (total soluble solids, total acidity and pH) and wine phenolic profile. During the maturation period, the mean of maximum temperatures was 26.6°C, mean temperature 19.9°C, and the means of minimum temperatures were 15.1°C. The precipitation seems to be the most limiting factor, with a total precipitation of 178.5 mm during the maturation period. At harvest the grapes showed total soluble solids of 21 °Brix, total acidity of 80 meq L-1, pH 3.5. The yield was 10.16 t ha-1. The wines presented high phenolic quality with total polyphenol concentration of 1.696.5 mg L-1, total monomeric anthocyanin 74.5 mg L-1. The antioxidant activity determined by DPPH method was 6077.1 mM L-1 TEAC. It was verified that 'Merlot' produced quality grapes and wines, therefore presented a suitable viticultural and enological performance during season 2012 in the region of Campo Belo do Sul, Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
